There are four main events in gymnastics, floor, beam, bar, and vault. Floor is a series of skills and acrobatic moves performed in a routine to a certain type of music. This floor routine is performed on a matt. This matt is different than other for two main reasons. Firstly, it is huge and there is a white square drawn next to the border of the matt. These things are there for a reason, The matt is huge because your routine is supposed to be continuous without any stops in between and having a spacious matt will help because the gymnast won’t have to move forwards and backwards to find enough space to do their routine. The white square is drawn on the matt to indicate that your feet cannot land outside of that white line or else it would cause a point/s deducted from your overall floor routine score. Secondly, the matt you perform on is bouncy(spring floors.) The bounciness of the matt helps you to push off into skills in the air. Beam is a four inch piece of wood that you perform acrobatic moves and skills on. You usually perform these skills and acrobatic movements in a routine to music. This event requires a lot of balance and mental strength. This event requires balance because you need to perform all of your skills in a straight line without falling off(I personally find it the most challenging event). This event also requires mental strength because it is quite scary to be on a thin piece of wood that is suspended above the ground. Bars are a very difficult event in this event you perform a series of front and back flip on two uneven bars. You fly and summersault from bar to bar which makes the fall very painful. Before you go on the bars you are advised to apply something called grips and chalk on your hands. Grips are a type of gloves that cover on the palm of your hand and are secured with velcro, chalk is a white powdery substance that you apply on your hands and feet. These materials prevent your hands from getting rips which is when the skin on your palms gets blistered and rips off and trust me I have had them before and you do not want to have them, they HURT. They are also used to make holding the bar easier. Vault is when you run towards a spring that you jump onto, this spring then pushes onto a stationary object on which you do a skill or two. After that you push of the stationary object and do a skill into the air and land with both feet. Having a balanced landing on both feet with these events is critical. You must land on your two feet and maintain your balance for around two to five seconds and then salute or if you do not do this you will have points deducted from your overall score. There are few things that you can do to improve your score other than executing the routine perfectly. The one thing that you can do is increase your DOD level. The DOD means the degree of difficulty that your skills are. If you have a high DOD then you can get a higher score even if you mess up a bit during your routine you would still get an okay score. You can have a difficulty level in all the events:floor, beam, bar, and vault. You may think that the DOD depends on different things for each event but it doesn’t. The DOD depends on the skills that you perform in your routines and their difficulty.
